Hope
"Hope" by Giulia
Grade 7/ Materials used: iPhone and flashlight
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all.
- Emily Dickinson

I got chills when my student turned in her image depicting "Hope" (above).
That image encouraged me all the more to promote the use of mobile devices in ways that provide opportunities for students to express themselves through these wonderful gadgets tucked away in their pockets.

Just as I had been inspired by the images turned in by each student, I decided that I would start our next class by sharing the video of the best shots from our previous challenge "Simply Me". The students love to see each other's productions and I find it important to talk to them about photography techniques demonstrated in their peers' work.

Once we finished celebrating each other's work, it is time for this week's challenge: I've Got A Feeling

I begin by asking students to respond to the following questions on a backchannel. (I personally like using TodaysMeet.)

Think About It:
  1. Describe ways photos can depict emotion.
  2. Pick an emotion and explain how you would depict it in a photo.
Below are some of my favorite responses:

After we discussed the responses of the students, I introduced this week's challenge with a twist:

Challenge with a Twist: I've Got a Feeling
Subject: Emotions/ Feelings

Find your Feeling and Your Partner
  1. Draw an emotion from the bag provided by your teacher
  2. Look at the list below and find your contrasting emotion partner
    Contrasting Emotions:
    * Love - Anger
    * Peace - Fear
    * Hope - Despair
    * Joy - Grief
    * Excited - Serene
  • With your partner, create two (separate) images depicting each of the contrasting emotions you selected.
    Twist #1: the primary colors used in your photo must be related to the emotion you selected
    Twist #2: you and your partner must be integrated into the images

  •  Using Google Docs collaboratively with your partner...
    a. Write a reflection explaining the process and choices made in the "I've Got a Feeling" images you developed.
        (Title: Your Names + iPhoto I've Got a Feeling; example "Joyce and Bertille iPhoto I've Got a Feeling")
    b. Research the emotions you selected and how to best depict them
        (e.g. colors, facial expressions, proportion, shadows)
    c. Select a minimum of 2 tips/tricks from the attached links below and apply them into your images
        (In your Google Doc specify the tips you selected and cite the link where you got them from
Note: You and your partner must take/direct all the images to be included in your challenge.

Tips, Tricks, and Inspiration

Once again, the students went above and beyond in their representations of contrasting emotions.
