"Jack in the Box" designed by Valéria 7A
Stop Motion animations: the art of creating movement through still images.
In 6th grade, students learn about iPhotography: the art of capturing visual imagery on a mobile device.
Students in the 7th grade take their photography skills to the next level by developing Stop Motion animations.

This Is How I Do It

Learning Target:
I will investigate video editing and stop motion in order to design and create a 6 second Stop Motion Vine.

Key vocabulary:
  • frame: one single picture in the series that composes the complete moving picture
  • frames per second: the number of images per second; the more images your have, the smoother the animation
  • storyboard: a graphic organizer in the form of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a motion picture, animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence (Wikipedia)
In Class:
As a class, we watch the short Stop Motion Animation tutorials below.
I ask questions to check for students' understanding on the major points made in each movie.
1. Storyboard It
2. Time It

3. Shoot It
4. Finalize It

Challenge #1: Vine Design

The students' first challenge was inspired by Vine: a social media that allows "users to record and edit six-second long looping video clips" (Wikipedia).

We read and discussed the following articles on Khoa Phan as a source of inspiration:

The students then began brainstorming ideas for their stop motion animation challenge for that week.
*Many kids were able to start the story boarding process in class.

Homework: Students are asked to...
1. Download Stop Motion Studio (FREE app) onto their iPad/ iPhone.
2. Review the Stop Motion Tutorials watched in class.
3. Go through the four steps to create a 6 second Stop Motion Vine using materials they have around their house.
  • storyboard it
  • time it
  • shoot it
  • finalize it
4. Come prepared to share their work!
