"No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings,
deep down into the dark rooms of our souls."
Ingmar Bergman
Unit Learning Target:
I will investigate video shooting techniques and video editing software in order to design and create a:
Live Lip Sync Music Video.

Lesson #1: Exploring Filming Techniques

Learning Target: (daily lesson)
I will investigate video shooting techniques and select three to recreate.
The students began by creating an unlisted YouTube playlist where they could store their videos for easy access and sharing. * Making a video unlisted means that only people who have the link to the video can view it. (Google Support)
This first lesson was exploratory. The students were to research filming techniques and select three to experiment with.
They were to come prepared to share their techniques with their peers at our next class.

All techniques were to be properly labeled and uploaded to the students' playlist on YouTube.

I provided them with the following links to launch their research:
  1. Media College
    a. Shots and Framing
  2. Vimeo Video School

Lesson #2: Alfred Hitchcock- The Master of Suspense

Learning Target: (daily lesson)
I will research Alfred Hitchcock's shooting techniques and select three to recreate myself.

You cannot discuss film making without mentioning: Sir Alfred Hitchcock.

"... nicknamed the "Master of Suspense", Alfred Hitchcock pioneered many techniques in the suspense and psychological thriller genres. He framed shots to maximize anxiety, fear, or empathy, and used innovative film editing in his movies." Wikipedia
In Class:
We watched the video clips below on techniques developed by Alfred Hitchcock.
Note: The big ideas from these videos have been compiled here: Film Techniques of Alfred Hitchcock
... and ACTION!
Students were asked to select two techniques to develop and practice on their own.
The third technique required by all students to recreate was the Dolly Zoom
All techniques were to be properly labeled and uploaded to the students' playlist on YouTube.

Lesson #3: Extraordinary Editing

Learning Target: (daily lesson)
I will explore video editing tools and select one to become familiar with to edit my videos.

"Film editing... has been regarded by many as the 'invisible' art behind some of the greatest motion picture sequences of all time.

Film editing is a skilled art - the selection and integration of a sequence of shots taken from thousands of feet of film to establish a structure, tempo, mood, or style."
- Tim Dirks on filmsite.org
In Class:
We began class by watching "The History of Cutting" and discussing the editing process in film making.
The students then watched examples of famous editing sequences such as the progressive opening sequence from "The Dark Knight" that draws the viewers to anticipate the appearance of one of the greatest villains: the Joker!
The following resource was provided for students to further explore editing techniques:

... and ACTION!
Once students grasped the basic concepts of film editing, they set off to explore editing software to use themselves.
They were to select one to use in the development of their music video.

I recommended the following editing tools:
  • iMovie (Apple devices)
  • MovieMaker (Windows)
  • WeVideo (online)

Lesson #4: Storyboarding

Learning Target: (daily lesson)
I will develop a storyboard- a visual blueprint- of my Music Video.
Storyboard Creator: Walt Disney
Image retrieved from answers.com

"In the 1930s, the Walt Disney Studios developed storyboards as a tool for creating engaging and coherent stories.

A storyboard is series of sketches that maps out a story and allows filmmakers to visualize the sequence of the plot.

Storyboards help filmmakers determine the lucidity of a story, and whether there are any significant “plotholes,” or inconsistencies."
 - by Alyssa Carnahan Open Studio
In Class:
We began today's lesson by watching the history and purpose of storyboarding.
Students were given the following resource to further their investigations on storyboarding:

... and ACTION!
Students developed a storyboard for their music video using the knowledge gained from their investigations.

Lesson #5: Live Lip Sync Music Video

Learning Target:
I will apply knowledge gained in the areas of filming and editing techniques to create a: Live Lip Sync Music Video.

Students were given the remainder of the quarter to create their Live Lip Sync music videos.
Once finished with their video, they were to self-assess using the 4 point rubric below.
* I created an adapted Single-point rubric for me to assess their work.

We celebrated their accomplishments with our own Music Video Awards day.

* COMING SOON- I am awaiting for parent and student permission to share their music videos.
